Hong Kong

July 2014:

Traveling to Hong Kong for the weekend felt like we were on holiday back west.  Extremely westernized, the “Honkies” are far removed from the Chinese culture.  The fact that it was a British colony up until ’97, there were British accents and reminders of lovely London town around every corner.

Hong Kong is a truly fascinating city.  Picture a luscious, mountainous island filled with not tiki huts, but towering skyscrapers instead.  It’s quite the dichotomy of landscapes.

We’re suckers for good views, so our first stop was Victoria Peak.  To get there, we took an incredibly steep tram ride from sea level to 552m, and were rewarded with a breathtaking view of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbor.

You can get an idea for how steep it was...

By night, we decided to hop on-board the world-renowned Star Ferry for a cruise across Victoria Harbor.

Before dinner, we stopped to admire “A Symphony of Lights”, the world’s largest permanent light and sound show, according to Guinness World Records.

And for dinner, we finally enjoyed Hong Kong’s most famous dish, sweet and sour pork!

On Saturday, we decided to escape the humidity and heat of the city, and take the ferry to Lama Island for some proper island life enjoyment.  A beautiful hike and fresh seafood was the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Our waiter was hilarious...he kept handing me things to hold...
I know what y'all are thinking...any other guesses as to what it is?  haha  It's a clam!  Can you believe it?

Back in the city, we cruised around on one of the world’s last double-decker trams, hopping off for a stroll around Victoria Park.  The perfect Sunday stroll before heading to the airport back to crazy Beijing!
